Social Networking Site Posts May Affect Insurance Coverage
~ via WBOY.Com

BRIDGEPORT -- Everyone seems to have one these days, a Facebook profile, but along with those posts can come risks that many users may not consider.

"Issues we see with Facebook and things like that is people feel safe," Sergeant Gary Weaver, with the Bridgeport Police Department, said. "They'll post anything on there, and they want everyone to know this is what we're doing."

Although Facebook allows users to connect with people they know fairly well, in reality they have the potential to interact with more than 500 million users. Those other people could potentially put their friends' information at risk.

Many users will post their vacation, dinner and weekend plans on their Twitter accounts, Facebook accounts and even Four Square accounts, letting potential criminals know who their potential victims may be.

"Alerting someone to the fact that you're not going to be at home, certainly causes the insurance company to be put at a greater risk," Tommy Lopez, vice president of WatchTower Insurance Agency, said.

In 2009, there were more than 9 million property crime cases in the U.S., according to the FBI. And police say homeowners should be especially careful of what they post around the holidays.
